The Man Behind Modern Skate & Surf

Behind every great skate shop is a passionate skater, and for Modern Skate & Surf, that's George Leichtweis. Since 1979, George has been the driving force behind what started as a small store in Royal Oak and grew into one of the largest indoor skateparks in the US.

For over four decades, George's commitment to skateboarding has never wavered. He's weathered the ups and downs of the industry, always putting the skating community first. Today, as Chairman of the Board Retailers Association, George continues to advocate for independent shops across the country.

From hosting world-class events to supporting local skaters, George has left an indelible mark on skateboarding in Michigan and beyond. As we celebrate 45 years, we're not just honoring a business, but a legacy of dedication to the sport and culture we all love.
